Every moment I spend trying to craft and deliver an assignment that can't be cheated on is a moment I'm not spending explaining a substantive concept. To do that on the strength of the assumption that some students will be inclined to cheat is to punish everyone for my own assumptions about a few.

I'm also reluctant to stand at the front of the class, before a group of people I'm only just meeting for the first time, and casually inform them that I don't trust them. That doesn't engender the kind of dynamic I'm aiming for and as a student I would have been put off by that tack immediately.

And while it may be the least important factor, and it is definitely peculiar to law and other professional disciplines, I don't think it makes a ton of sense to do anything that makes the classroom experience significantly different from practice. </rant>

I'll caveat all of that with a general observation that none of the above is to suggest I believe those resorting to blue books and pencils, etc. are *wrong* -- just that there is definitely another side to consider.

Seeing a lot of discourse around AI and assignment creation. I definitely do what I can to make it straightforward to *not* cheat and more difficult *to* cheat, but I’m not giving up on writing assignments entirely. I have more faith in my students than that. Small diatribe incoming.

I don't think the art, science, or magic of writing is going away because AI can do a serviceable job of it. Owing to that, I reckon that it's my job to do the best I can to deliver graduates that can reduce their ideas to the written form with as much fidelity as possible.
